December is such an exciting time for everyone! With winter holidays in full swing, I try to make a concentrated effort each December to incorporate activities for my boys that put their focus outward and give them an opportunity to do some good in our community! Let’s be honest, with all the gift guides and holiday sales, I need the reminder as much as they do. Here are 3 things to do during the holiday month to give back:
Volunteer at your local food bank. The need is never greater than in December! This is a wonderful way to see firsthand the good that even one person can do. I take my boys to the Marin Food Bank as often as possible. They always leave with an immense gratitude for what they have at home!
Adopt a child or family for the holidays. Contact your local Toys for Tots or Salvation Army to see if they offer an adopt a family program in your area. You’ll receive information on the family (ages, gender, interests) and you can use that to provide gifts for someone without extra resources! I try to find kids that are around the same age as Brad and Toby, and it’s so fun to see them pick out things they might like. It’s a sweet family night wrapping gifts for someone else (and I always bake them cookies as a bonus!).
Sort and donate. Anyone else confused by kids who say they’re bored when your house is FILLED with toys?! Go through your home and find items (especially coats, shoes, and toys!) that you no longer need or use. Anything that’s still in great shape with lots of life left in it can be donated to your local thrift store or homeless shelter. This is a great opportunity to remind little ones of the abundance in their own home, to make room for new things, and to give to others who have less. Bonus: having less makes cleanup easier! High five!
I hope this gives you some inspiration for the coming weeks! I know how busy December is (are you also desperately trying to fit a nap in?!), but I never regret taking a little time to do something kind. Happy holidays, everyone!
