To do: Create a solid routine to mitigate big emotions with changes in schedule.
Time: Daily
Materials: Calendar, stick-to-itiveness

If there’s one thing kids love, it’s routine. They love knowing what’s going to happen next. They love being able to list off the things they do before going to bed, to school or to daycare.

When big emotions happen, it can be helpful to rely on the routine to help smooth things out. For example, if your child is having a tough time in the morning, you can say “What happens every day? Do I ALWAYS come to get you from school? Yes, I will always come to get you.”

Try these ideas for establishing a routine so your child can feel confident in their knowledge!

Calendar: Use a calendar to write events that are out of routine. Point to it for days in advance, gently reminding your child that you have a visit to the dentist, or you’re going on a trip.

Before Bed: Speak about your day while getting ready for bed. It might be repetitive, but that’s fine! “Today, we got up and had oatmeal for breakfast. I dropped you off at daycare and you played with your friends. I picked you up.” Etcetera!

Morning: A solid morning routine can set the tone for the entire day. Make sure to give yourself enough time so you’re not in a rush. Start the day with some soft classical music, a hearty breakfast and a kiss and hug!
