__
What do you use a peeler for at home? Perhaps vegetables like cucumbers and carrots, or fruits like apples. Let your child practice using a peeler with the following tips!
- Find a small peeler to fit your child’s grip
- Show your child how to peel away from their hands
- Make sure the vegetables or other ingredients are dry for better grip
- For younger children who aren’t ready to use a peeler, include them in other ways like disposing of the peels in the trash or compost
We have a perfect recipe to get started peeling with your family. Have you ever tried Fried Apples?!
Recipe to practice peeling: Fried Apples
This is a super easy recipe, and a nice addition to breakfast, lunch, or dinner! Especially handy if you have an abundance of fall apples.
Head to the store to get some smallish granny or red apples. Some recipes call for granny smith apples, but the first time, try whichever size apples best fit your child’s hand. A good grip is important when peeling!
Next, show your child how to peel with the blade pointing away from their hands. Alternatively, if you have an apple peeling tool, the ones that you crank, get it all set up and let your child go to town!
Ask your child to peel a handful of apples, 4 or 5, then you can core them and cut them in thin slices.
Melt about a 1/2 cup of butter in a skillet, and stir in 1/2 cup of sugar and 2 tablespoons of cinnamon to the butter. Add apples and cook down until they are your preferred consistency! The first time you try this recipe, take some apples out while they are a bit crunchy, and cook some until they are a bit softer. Decide as a family which you like better!
